Sanshin lesson with Kossan

I am totally a self-taught sanshin player so I always wanted to take a lesson from the real authentic Okinawan sanshin player. But how can I find that kind of skilled musician in New York City, on the other side of the world? The answer is you can't. I had to use what I had. I am a self-taught Tsugaru-shamisen player to start with, so I basically transferred all of those my poorly-immitated shamisen technics to sanshin, and had been, I mean, have been cheating on my sanshin playing since the beginning.

That's going to end today. I met Kossan who was playing the sanshin in traditional style at Japan Arts Matsuri 2009 on the other day. I found out this mean sanshin player, who was also a zen monk, was teaching sanshin every week. I jumped right on and came to his class. He gave me one excellent lecture. He corrected me on everything, starting with how to hold the instrument to how to put it back in the case. We played a couple of practice tunes. I had a blast.

Kossan is about to leave New York to attend at Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts for next four years. It is too bad that we just got to know each other. After the class, he talked about his own pleasant philosophy as a monk, as a person. That made me feel really comfortable. Kossan said that he would come back to New York from time to time. Kossan, please play a concert with WaFoo when you come back. I promise it will be a fun concert because all the members of WaFoo are good people.

Let's not forget to mension, Kossan is having the last concert in New York titled "Kossan Matsuri (festival)" on Dec. 12th & 13th. The detail is on his web site. This is the last chance to see Kossan's performance. Don't miss it!

Japan Arts Matsuri (JAM 2009)

Executive director of the show,
Koji EL Komada

I went to see Japan Arts Matsuri (JAM 2009) in Brooklyn. "Matsuri" means festival, by the way. That was one great collaboration of acts. There were Japanese traditional arts, Okinawan music, samurai sword play, modern ballet, modern jazz dance, and modern arrange of Yosakoi (traditional dance of Shikoku Island). The live show was all so powerful and very explosive. The energy of life force thundered all over the hall. Lest we forget, every act was based on Japanese culture which I have been desperately longing for. Japanese culture changed a lot. I was born and raised in a quite traditional area of Tokyo, but, even to me, those "Japanese things" are like something from other country. You konw, I was watching MTV and playing video games when I was a kid 30 years ago. That was the evil side effect of the rapid development.

During the show, I really enjoyed the modern performing arts in under way. After the show, I saw the ghost image of the history of us Japanese, our roots.

WaFoo Chamber Unit @ Tuttoriso in Staten Island, NY

Yuuki Koike (Flute, Alto Sax)
Eiji Obata (Guitar)
Kazuo Nakamura (Bass)
Ippei Ichimaru (Percussion)

New York under the Autumn sun. I sat down on my favorite seat on the front deck of the ferry, feeling the wind sweeping between Brooklyn and New Jersey, and crossed over to Staten Island. We played the regular gig at Tuttoriso.

This is rare. Three of the red book animals, acoustic bassists, appeared at the same time. It was like I was witnessing three dodos at the same time. Our good friend from Japan, Shin-ichi Yabuno, came all the way across the ocean and sat in with us on a few tunes. Well, I, Ippei had also jammed on the bass a bit just for the heck of it, stealing the instrument from Kazuo.

Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock/Jack DeJohnette Concert @ NJ PAC

I am in heaven. I just saw the concert of Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock/Jack DeJohnette at New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Well, I could only afford the cheapest ticket so my seat was way back and way up high of the concert hall. It was like I was sitting on the top of the score board of a baseball ground, and I was looking diagonally down like an Olympic ski jumper on a top of a take-off ramp.

Needless to say, the performance was out of this world. Though I have been a long-time fun since my college years, it was the first time to see them in live. (They don't come to Boston too often, you know). The gentle tide of their sound reached to the end of the gallery on the 4th floor. Until recently, although I always enjoy the live concerts of big names, those concerts made me feel the inferior complex about my musical ability afterwards. Well, I am pushing 40 now and, by the good side effect of aging, those negative thoughts do not come up in my mind any more. Confucius once said in Analects "once you turn 40, you will not be perplexed." I think, in the meaning of "not being perplexed" includes the thought of "giving up on a lot of things." Don't take me wrong. I mean it in good way. What I mean by "giving up" is "shaving off unnecessary things and make every thought lean." That is, I think, "not being perplexed." I am able to think and feel straight now, like "Music is great." Period.

I was still hearing the lingering of the concert on the way home. Ah, that improvised ballad was awesome.

Taiko Drum Class (Week 3)

Kaoru is tuning the Oke-do Daiko by tightening the rope around the drum. I see, it looks like the tuning system is almost same as djembe drum.

Welcome to the Week Three. I am still having trouble on simply getting good sounds. When Kaoru plays, the sound is heavy and it sounds like DON-DON-DON-DON. When I play, it is like puff-peff-poff-paff. Some mysterious sound effects which shouldn't come out from taiko drums are there. Kaoru said, "Don't try to make a big sound but a sharp sound." Oh-oh, my brain hurts.

We learnt very important aspect of Japanese music called "Ma" (space between notes). Come to think of it, what we have been doing were not really metronomic. Another tough, but interesting, subject which I have to conquer. Kaoru also showed us a new shout "Yo-Oh!" Oo, Ippei loves it. It sounds so Japanese. My Japanese blood boils.

Idols: Demons and Saints by John Wellington

My new friend, George, from taiko school invited me to the event which has the theme of Asian pop culture. It was held at the Drom in East Village and the Avant-garde paintings of today's presenter, John Wellington, were hanged in everywhere. (You can check out his works at his home page). He includes lots of stuff from Japanese pop culture; such as Poke-Mon, Hello Kitty, Astro Boy, and the plastic figures from comic books and anime which are very popular in Japan nowadays. The title of the exhibition was "Idols: Demons and Saints." Mmm, well, I am just an ordinary man so I cannot quite tell which part is demon or saints, but the artworks sure are interesting. The appeal of mismatches. I can tell you that you have never seen anything like them before. You should check it out.

The show started in this Avant-garde atmosphere with Kazumi's beautiful belly dance, which continued to Masae's very exotic Cabaret style dance, then Rami Seo, the gayakeum (Korean Zither) player, showed her virtuosity on her instrument with a great tabla player. To wrap up the whole night, one and only Okinawan pop band in New York, HappyFunSmile, came onto the stage. The whole act is based on Chindon-ya, which are the strolling musicians who advertise for shop openings and sales and so on. They go streets to streets playing music, dancing, handing flyers. They usually wear some kind of costumes to get people's attention. You don't see too many of them any more but that was how lots of local advertising were done in Japan. Anyway, let's get back to HappyFunSmile. These guys transformed this strolling advertising to a great stage act. WELL-DONE!! This is really great idea to make a show out of it. Their act is fun, loud and crazy. Some people might not be able to digest this craziness but I think this is the origin of music, this is the healthiest appearance of musicians. We do not have to put on airs. Music is jubilance, wilderness and insanity.

I was so happy to see such a great band today.

Taiko Drum Class (Week 2)

I was in Boston till yesterday and came to the taiko class almost immediately after I came back to the city. That was the second week of the taiko class and, again, that was a fun class. We learnt the traditional way to sit, bow then stand up. Well, I did the same thing when I was doing Kendo, but I was completely forgetting these traditional manners. We also learnt how to shout properly. Mmm, this is good. These shouts in between tunes sound so Japanese. It is addictive as well. I am sorry if I start shouting in the middle of next WaFoo concert.

Taiko Drum Class (Week 1)

On the other day, I, Ippei, took a taiko drum class with sensei Kaoru Watanabe. I have been the biggest fan of Japanese taiko group Kodo ever since when I was a music college student, and I always wanted to learn how to play the taiko drums from Kaoru-san who is an ex-member of Kodo. My dream has been realized at last after two long years.

This is the 5-week course for beginners and I have just finished the first class. I already have a problem.

I CAN'T MAKE A GOOD SOUND!

"M-maybe the taiko is broken?" That was the conclusion which this professional escapist had reached. Of course taiko was fine, but when I played it, the sound was missing the bass, in other words, it was just the sound of its skin. The sound did not fully resonate with its wooden body. If I really force it, I get one or two good ones but I have got to get good tones continuously and consistently without forcing it. Kaoru-san seems he has no problem getting good tones all the time. Mmm, I am in trouble. I cannot get too much further with this poor sound. I have got to learn the right form and got to hit the dead center of the drumhead all the time.

WaFoo Chamber Unit @ Tuttoriso in Staten Island, NY

It is only natural that, after the summer time ended, the sun is setting surprisingly earlier than a week ago. Around 5pm, the sky on the west is already in madder red.

Kazuo the bassist and Yuuki the flautist had to play for an opera on that evening so I, Ippei, sat in as a bassist which is very rare. I have played the bass with WaFoo only twice before so that was the third time.

With Takeshi the keyboardist and Eiji the guitarist, we played relatively tough jazz tunes which are not really the most popular Jazz Standards, like Bill Evans' "Very Early." We, jazz musicians, have got to have the ability to make the difficult tunes sound easy and also beautifully plus naturally like a current of river. If you think jazz musicians play just random notes - well well well - think again. We have our share of trials and tribulations behind the scene. Especially in the band like WaFoo whose members are fond of putting extra unusual notes and chords here and there, habitual training of playing those tough tunes is absolutely necessary.

Oops, I was forgetting I am just a percussionist in this band and it does not matter how tough the harmonies would be. My bandmates, break a leg. Ha-ha-ha.

AM New York

AM New York (2009

A small picture of WaFoo appeared on today's AM New York, the free paper in New York.

You can check out the PDF version on the link below. We are on the top part of the Page 18.

AM New York (Nov. 5, 2009)

It is rather small, but I will cut out the pic and put it on the fridge. By the way, the picture was taken at the gig last week and I, Ippei, was there also. I should be sitting right next to Yuuki playing my tambourine with my happy face on for the camera, but I am edited out. Oh well.
