Let's celebrate Winter Solstice!
I love to watch sunrise & sunset. Although they are happening everyday, isn't it so hard to watch them as often as we want? It comes even much harder to watch them with the great view of horizon. Too many houses and buildings!
Recently I happened to have many chances to watch these great phenomenas. Besides, living in Staten Island probably made me easy to find the good spots where we can see the wonderful horizon. Whenever I had a chance, I always felt that it was too beautiful to let them go without being captured.
So, I started taking pictures and now I have some nice collections.Since today is Winter Solstice, I'd like to celebrate it with some of those pictures. Aren't they beautiful?
One of the Staten Island's Best Kept Secrets
Do you love cookies? If you do, or even if you don't, you got to check out this place, "Cookie Jar" located on 1226 Forest Ave. in Staten Island. I've never been a repeater to go any cookie places in my entire life until I ate their cookies. The interior design makes you very happy, too.Thursday, December 17, 2009

Art at Bay (St. George, Staten Island)

Did you know that Staten Island is not a small island? Actually much bigger than Manhattan!! although it looks very very small in NYC subway map which is probably the most popular map to the people who visit or live in NYC.
Well, it is true that there are much less people live in Staten Island and I admit that there are not so many hot spots like Manhattan, but let me tell you this, as same as the other boroughs, a lot of artists live in Staten Island, too. Yuuki and I went to the opening reception "Art at Bay" last Saturday night. It is held at just one block away from Staten Island Ferry Terminal on Bay St. If you haven't visited there yet, please go and find out the wonderfulness of Staten Island artists! It is absolutely inspiring!

Heavy snow in Boston
It snowed hard in Boston. Oh boy...... Almost all the members of WaFoo once lived in here and I am the one who had stayed here the longest; about ten years. After I saw the snow, it finally hit me that I am in Boston.
"I like Winter." My friend's 4-year-old daughter said. Ah-huh, that's the sentence I don't hear too often in Boston.
"I like Winter but haven't seen it for a long time." I see. You just said something which a 10-years veteran of Boston has never heard.
Little girl, you will have a plenty of Winter as long as you are in Boston. Boston is a hell of a place and I stress on "hell." Hee-hee-hee. Boston's Winter is wicked long....

The most unexpected guest
Hello everyone. I hope you guys are enjoying this early winter weather. I have something I want to share with you. I had the most unexpected guest when I was helping raking up the fallen leaves at my friend's place on the other day.

Miyarabi @ Otto's Shrunken Head
I went to see the last live of one and only Okinawan band in New York, Miyarabi, lead by Kossan. From the downbeat to the last note, it was one heck of a fun live and was so energetic. Energetic performance is one of the characteristics of Kossan's shows. The members were great too. Kae was playing the taiko drums and actually I always wanted to talk to her ever since I saw her wonderful playing at the show of "Samurai Sword Soul." Although Rena was dancing flamboyantly and passionately with a 3-piece dance unit, Tonton-Byoshi, on the other day, she was dancing slowly in Eisa-style (Okinawan festival dance) and was also singing. Kaori who possesses beautiful Japanese folkish voice was not only taking the lead female vocal with Miyarabi but also singing with HappyFunSmile, the band I am a groupie of. The members, whole staging, choice of tunes, they were all exceptionally good.
Oh well, because Kossan is going back to Japan, that was the last show of Miyarabi and they are disbanding such a great band. OH NO! DON'T STOP NOW! As a fun, I stand firmly against the discontinuation of the band.

After Party of "Idols: Demons and Saints"
Right before I was going to check out the performance of Kaoru Watanabe, my taiko drum instructor, I got a mail from my friend George-san. On the other day, I went to see the art/music exhibition of John Wellington and wrote how wonderful it was on WaFoo's blog on November 14th. George-san kindly let John and the performers know about the blog and John kindly invited me to the after-party of the show. I was so honored. Thanks to George-san and John-san. I went to the party right after Kaoru's show.
Some of the art works at the exhibition were hanged on the wall of John's apartment, and this time, John himself gave me a little tour on his works. You can check out his works at his web site and he is incorporating lots of characters from Japanese pop culture into his works, such as Hello Kitty, Pika-chu, Astro Boy etc.. Each of those characters and each of those colors has much deeper meaning than it appears. I am not going to write down what John explained to me in here just because I am afraid to pass the message which John might not intend to. His works are really interesting and captivating. You guys should check them out.
I got to know lots of good people at this party. Lale and Kazumi, the prominent belly dancers who opened the exhibition at that night, Wynn and Akiko from HappyFunSmile, which was the band I instantly became a groupie of, and Reni the cosplayer who is like embodying the core of Japanese pop culture. Traci, Mark, Sato-san, it was so nice to meet you all. There are many more great artists in New York than I know. My dear new friends, if you and WaFoo can collaborate on some acts in the near future, we would be honored and would really appreciate it.

Another fun gig at Tuttoriso. The weather was not too good today and was raining from the morning. It was really chilly as well. A little after we started playing, the rain turned to snow. Wow, that explains. New York City just had the first snow. It will only get colder. Everyone, please get warm and be well.
After the gig, I got on to Staten Island Ferry getting snow flakes everywhere and headed to not home but to Manhattan. Today, I am going to see a couple of shows; one is Kaoru Watanabe, my taiko instructor, playing in Alicia Hall Moran's Motown Project and the other is Nobuko Miyazaki the flautist playing with a world music band.

Cambridge University's 800th Anniversary
Wow, the lighting of the Empire State Building is blue today. The color of the lighting changes every time some event happens. According to the official calendar, this blue lighting is to celebrate Cambridge University's 800th anniversary. E-e-800th anniversary!? It is about 300 years before Columbus came to America. Jeez, that's really, literally, an old school!

Taiko Drum Class (Week 5, Final!)
This is the last class. We warmed up with "Onsen Taiso" (Hot-spring exercise). The movement is quite simple. Open the legs and sink the hip down like a sumo wrestler and move the upper body up and down. The movement is like a person going in and out of a hot spring. Shoot, this exercise is so really tough and my quads were giving up on me lifting up and down this metabolic body. Oh well, it is no mystery in getting tired so quickly. I was lifting up and down 200 pounds of meat in such an awkward posture for two minutes. I did the same thing when I was doing judo, but five years of being a couch-potato killed the muscle and the fighting spirit that I used to possess. I am growing old alright. Growing up? I don't know. Before talking about growing, I have to do something about this meat.
Kaoru-san, thank you very much for last five weeks. This is the last beginner's class but I will continue taking your lessons on the intermediate class.

Sanshin lesson with Kossan
My new friend who is also a zen monk, Kossan, kindly gave us another sanshin lesson in spite of his busy schedule. Thank you so very much, Kossan. I have discovered a shocking fact. It is "You don't use the ring finger (on left hand) to play the sanshin." I had no idea, but the question is "why not?" Although there are several string instruments which omit certain fingers to use, there are crystal clear reasons for that. For example, when you play the acoustic bass, which is my main instrument, you don't use the ring finger because the instrument is way too big and it is physically impossible to reach with the ring finger. (there are exception for this. Some bass players, especially young guys, use the newly developed fingering which utilizes all the fingers and our bassist Kazuo is also using this technic). Some bass instructors teach their students not to use the ring finger when you play the electric fretless basses. Though I don't teach that way, I kind of understand it because an electric bass is not as huge as an acoustic bass but still its string length is quite long, meaning you have to spread the left hand when you play. When you play the shamisen, which is Japanese three-string banjo used in the main islands, you don't use the pinkie because you have to place the nail of the index finger on the finger board. In this particular fingering, the pinkie does not reach further than the ring finger. Now let's go back to sanshin. The scale (the length of the strings) is a bit shorter than guitars so you can easily use all fingers on every position. There is no special fingering technic like shamisen. Mmm, incomprehensible. I searched on the net but there is no convincing explanations. To be honest, it is much easier and much more natural to use the ring finger. Well, what should I do? If I correct my fingering, I have to do it now.....
